Trust > Hope
I have a profound love of words, I would be content sitting with a Dictionary or Thesaurus over a fiction novel any day. The word “Hope”, derives many positive emotions and is closely aligned to the word “Faith” these are positive words which happen to also be great names. I don’t now many who don’t enjoy the feeling of hope and faith, whenever talking to someone I haven’t spoken too in a while the message usually starts with “I hope you’re doing well”, this is natural second nature and positive.
Lately I’ve found myself diving into more affirmative literature that is aspirational and visionary and have gained new appreciation and admiration for the word “trust”. I’ve found that the two words are actually inter-changeable however one is more action ordinated and affirmative in tone. To say “I trust you’re doing well” is to speak into existence and affirm the thought. To hope feels like a wish and although wishing is great trusting is knowing and to me holds more energetic weight and power.
To trust another is to trust yourself, feelings of betrayal, let down, disappointment come mostly when unable to truly trust yourself. Therefore before hope, I think trust is more vital and important because even if something goes differently than you originally envisioned or planned you can trust that the result will flow into something that was meant to be experienced for your greater good. Now there are circumstances which are down right simply sad, hard to accept, beyond difficult to “trust”, the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza comes to mind, the young child who falls ill through no fault of there own and dies, every day tragedy is around the corner. Trusting you’ll have the ability to accept and rise to the challenge flipping the feeling of dis-empowerment around into an enabling power that allows a person to rise and not stay down supports individual “will” and “strength”.
So I choose to say, “Trust you’re well, trust you’ll have a good day, trust life is treating you good”, because even in the moment if it is not the seed of trust enables the growth of hope, therefore to me these days it is so vital and important to trust the process and remember to take action and to flow with nature, not against it.
Sober Thoughts
Self improvement has been embedded in my DNA for as long as I can remember. Over the last few months I’ve doubled down on making constructive changes in my lifestyle in order to have better outcomes for my life, to protect myself and others I care for. I gave up certain compulsive behavioral responses which included the consumption of Cannabis and Alcohol.
Maladaptive coping mechanisms are like default safety relief valves that create a release in the moment of stress however can cause significant challenges if the space isn’t vented and cleared. This analogy is using the visual of steam leaving a pipe and the haze that is created in an enclosed space when there is no venting. it becomes hot, difficult to see, unclear and overtime you begin to just get used to this environment it becomes normal, comfortable why would you leave.
Making a concentrated effort to completely change my life and stop any consumption of these substances along with the more important compulsive behaviors that have been present since my youth has made my energy and overall mindset more peaceful and solid.
A sober thought, moment to pause and acknowledge. It’s been almost 6 months, my breathing, vision, and mental clarity is sound. It started with a dopamine detox, evolved into a commitment to more conscious thought. It has now developed into a way of life without reservation and or any hesitation it has become a lifestyle. I hold zero judgment for those that indulge and still remain open to different experiences myself, it’s very much been an individual choice anchored on the principle of self-control and mastery. So far it’s been enlightening and empowering and I’m less anxious and more curious of what the next 6 months will bring.
Self-Forgiveness
“Taking responsibility for one’s actions, feeling genuine remorse, working towards restoring any damage done, and seeking personal renewal are the foundational steps to achieve true self-forgiveness.” - Better Help
Moving past your past you automatically create faith in your future. Your energy and belief within is vital to developing a healthy environment to thrive and prosper. I’ve been beyond fortunate in life to be influenced and surrounded by incredible people from all different walks of life for which I hold immense gratitude.
Words are very powerful and for over a decade I’ve been bound by a message that I received when I was 25 years old from a business partner. It has haunted me everyday subconsciously causing deep insecurity, guilt and shame that wasn’t my own but what I took on. The message below was sent November 28th, 2012 , I’ve blacked out the names mentioned and wont release the author. The powerlessness I felt was beyond and although I’ve proven to myself the statement below false it’s impact was felt.
Jerome,
Your intellectual incompetence and self-entitlement continues to astound me. Especially the stolen IP part, as if you ever in your life developed any IP or as if you had the capability to do so. From the tone of your post, I would say that ***** **** told you off (like others for whom you are a laughing stock lately, probably after he spoke with ***** guys)
Either file papers and sue us if you think you have anything or you will be hit with a liable suit yourself. So many people are tired of your shit currently.
*****, ******, *****….. I am still in touch with them and they have a thing or two to say about you and the nature of our relationship. Especially **** and her mother.
I was a driven young man with a dream which was destroyed and then re-born, however this message has not allowed me to fully trust, love and accept blessings into my life. Some people feel the weight and disappointment of family, friends or loved ones and at the time I felt that along with a whole province and Atlantic Canada region.
In the summer of 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic there was also the global uprising in response to the brutal de-humanizing death of George Floyd while in police custody in the United States. These incidents still happen however also in the board rooms and offices. I call these situations “White Collar George Floyd”, not to be little or mock the force and gravity of what happened to Mr. Flyod but more so to acknowledge its existence in different ways and pervasive impact within society through different means.
This happens also with abuse of power such as public mischief using the threat or act of “false reporting of a crime to the police, which distracts police from other important responsibilities and community infinitives”, I’ve been a victim of this behavior and have done my best to not be burden by it. For all those who have ever felt let down and who I’ve ever disappointed I hope you accept my genuine apology and one day can forgive, this post is a catalyst and way to finally forgive myself.
I’d encourage anyone who is on a journey of self-discovery and improvement, who has a goal or dream. Before powering through make sure to truly forgive yourself and don’t allow others pain, fear, misconceptions and or thoughts define you, and don’t respond back with pain. Calmness is power, look in the mirror, level up, correct behavior and move forward, take accountability and don’t distract yourself. Don’t allow fear, rejection, and or insecurity to lead your path. Embrace the light, acknowledge the darkness and don’t be afraid to try again. Life is a gift, appreciate the present.
Thanksgiving 2023
Everyone and everything comes into your life for a reason. I’ve been blessed beyond words to have so many incredible influences in my life which have helped shape the person I am today. This has enabled me the ability to accomplish more than I could ever have imagined, however the reality is I’m still just getting started and there are more mountains and journeys ahead.
I’ve recently experienced a great spiritual, emotional and physical transformation a sense of purpose, power and renewal. There is no room for distractions or subconscious negative thoughts that don’t align with my natural abundance mindset. Thoughts of scarcity, fear of change these things don’t align with my vibration. Peace, inner calm, contentment, compassion, honesty, integrity, love for self and others this is the way.
There is so much gratitude I have in this moment and I’m grateful for the opportunity to get up each day knowing it’s a gift and never promised. Happy Thanksgiving to all my friends, family and loved ones appreciate you.
Stay blessed,
J
Ego Is The Enemy - Reflection
“If success is ego intoxication, then failure can be a devastating ego blow- turning slips into falls and little troubles into great unravelling’s. If ego is often just a nasty side effect of great success, it can be fatal during failure. Sabotage, unfairness, Adversity. Trails. Tragedy. No matter the label, it’s a trial. We don’t like it, and some of us are sunk by it. Others seem to be built to make it through. In either case its trial each person must endure.”
– Failure, Ego Is The Enemy by Ryan Holiday
"We don’t need pity-our own or anyone else’s- we need purpose, poise and patience.”
– Failure, Ego Is The Enemy by Ryan Holiday
Hurt people, hurt people. There is a lot of hurt in this world, financial hardship, emotional stress, health concerns, worry, fear, indulgence, selfishness. Before you can have empathy for others, I think it is crucial to have it for yourself. There is also a lot of hope, optimism, and opportunity however it Is not easily seen through the clouds.
My whole life I’ve struggled with self-esteem and a feeling of not being enough, this has manifested into reality more times than I care to acknowledge. The inability to get myself out of my own way at times has prevented many of my dreams from becoming a reality, yet with each step forward I have learned, recovered, and forged forward again. Perseverance, resilience, and empathy is what I’d like to be remembered for when its time for my final sunset.
There is a wellspring of deep immense shame, hurt, and regret that I think every human being feels at some point or another in life. The ability to channel these emotions into constructive creative pursuits has been life changing for me, however loss of focus, awareness or simply lack of selfcare can create significant avoidable challenges that become life altering in negative ways unless addressed directly. “Let go and let God” is a common phrase that I think is very relatable and relevant. The word God is defined as the supreme or ultimate reality, therefore within you there is God, a powerful ruler, and the reality you choose will be what you experience.
In Memory Corporal Samson
It’s hard to put into words the impact and feeling of receiving news of the passing of someone you respect, care for and appreciate. Jordan Samson was a friend we were in the same Canadian Armed Forces - Basic Military Qualification Course in 2018, and we belong to the same military regimental family. He was an exceptional humble person who carried a quite grace and confidence. I’ll always remember a conversation we had outside of the Halifax Armoury at the end of a training evening, it left a lasting impression on me on just how hardworking, dedicated and focused he was, it was truly impressive Jordan was wise beyond his years.
It was his natural sense of service, of being helpful to others. Jordan was a leader, wither on the ice playing hockey the sport he loved, at work and or as dependable and reliable member of the regimental family of the Princess Louise Fusiliers. Cpl Samson embodied the best of the human spirit and regimental motto he ascribed too (Faithfully), the promise of a better future. Jordan’s whole life was ahead of him yet he accomplished so much with the time he had. A light gone to soon but who’s memory will shine on and never be forgotten. You’ll be missed immensely Jordan, my deepest sympathy’s to your entire family who loved you so much, words can do no justice the feeling of your void, heartfelt.
Rest in peace my friend,
Fideliter!

Change of Command
On Sunday 5th June, 2022 at 2:00 pm the Princess Louise Fusiliers (PLF) commenced a Change of Command Parade. A storied military tradition that has been taking place in Halifax since the unit was founded June 18th 1869.
As an officially constituted unit of Canada, The Princess Louise Fusiliers were authorized in 1867. During the unit's history, it has undergone several name changes. On November 5, 1869, the regiment was named the 66th The Halifax Battalion of Infantry.
Ten years later, on November 14, 1879, the regiment was once again renamed, this time to the 66th Battalion "Princess Louise" Fusiliers, named for Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada at the time. It was shortly after this point in which the regiment received its first battle honour, when they helped suppress the North-West Rebellion of 1885.
The Commanding Officer (CO) is an officer in command of a military unit. The commanding officer has ultimate authority over the unit and is given wide latitude to run the unit as they see fit, within the bounds of military law.
A change of command is a military tradition that represents a formal transfer of authority and responsibility for a unit from one commanding or flag officer to another. The passing of colors, standards, or ensigns from an outgoing commander to an incoming one ensures that the unit and its soldiers is never without official leadership, a continuation of trust, and also signifies an allegiance of soldiers to their unit's commander.
In front of the Iconic newly renovated North Facing wall of the Halifax Armouries the change of command parade commenced. In front of family, friends, military dignitaries and the public. Words of encouragement, remembrance and appreciation were delivered and received with gratitude everyone understanding the gravity and importance of the moment.
I’ve grown tremendously the last few years and I attribute this primarily to the positive influences and leadership around me. In any organization you are only as good as your leadership, within the Canadian Armed Forces the most important position within any unit is that of the Commanding Officer (CO).
As a Jr. Officer it’s been my duty and job to learn and I’ve had the best example’s to look up too. LCol Pitcher took over command of the PLF in 2019 and guided and led our organization throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. As a unit we persevered and stay connected and mission ready despite the many obstacles, protocols and challenges that were constantly coming at us.
LCol Matthews is now the new Commanding Officer of the PLF. I know Ma’am to be an incredibly compassionate and demanding leader who is a gifted communicator. She gives clear direction and shares expectations on the standard of excellence that must be sustained by all within the unit.
Embodying that high standard is what has elevated her to this honourable position. It is also why she has broken a glass ceiling being the first female commanding officer in 36 Canadian Brigade history. It was an honour to witness this historic and timeless tradition and to see two of the greatest leaders I’ve ever known exchange command from one to the other.

A Vimy Ridge Moment
Approaching Vimy Ridge you see the Canadian and France flag flying high beside each other, then just beyond there it is the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. I've made the pilgrimage, I'm in awe, with each step closer you start to realize the names of our fallen are chiseled into the stone at this point I'm overwhelmed.
I spent a good amount of time exploring the grandeur of Sculptor Walter Allwards masterpiece taking in the moment. Looking up and out towards the battle field where so many made the ultimate sacrifice I read the quote below.
"This monument was built by the people of Canada as a tribute to their countrymen who fought in the Great War and, particularly, to the more than 66,000 men who gave their lives."
This is sacred ground even Adolf Hitler understood its importance and protected it during WW2. While other nations WW1 monuments were desecrated and destroyed during the Nazi occupation of France Vimy was left untouched because it is a monument to peace, not a celebration of war.
It’s said the bravery and honor that the Canadians fought with during the Battle of Vimy was the birth of our nation our coming out moment at the global international stage.
It’s important to not allow the freedom that we fought for to ever go in vain, pessimism is easy to accept, thinking the worst almost a default for many, however after visiting the Vimy Memorial my resolve and outlook of optimism has never been greater, despite the fear and anxiety gripping the world we must not forget to look up and out and keep moving forward with the bravery and courage of our ancestors following each step.
In Memory of Captain Casey
"Why I am proud to be Canadian and serve Canada is because everyone is free to be them, and your possibilities are endless!" - Capt. Jenn Casey
Captain Casey and I grew up together, we were friends and shared a love of sports, our community and country. I remember the High School term project we did together in grade 10. The task was to write a feature news article and video production on someone who inspired us. We both looked at each other and instantly agreed, we would do our project on our English Teacher Mr. Wade Smith the very person who assigned us the project.
He inspired us both not only as a North End Halifax hero, but because he taught us to believe in our dreams and to have the courage to live them. Although heavy hearted, I think most Canadians are as optimistic as Jim Pattison. Jenn was special for so many reasons her integrity, loyalty, professionalism and passion was second to none.
Although my focus remains steady on OpLASER, the spirit of #OpINSPIRATION will forever be with me especially now. The only way I know how to salute the Ma'am and our fallen from OpREASURENCE is to stay focused on, What's Important Now a winning attitude is key. During last summer training BMOQ-A 1905, the message of priority was always "Mission, Soldiers and Self." I took that mindset to heart and will for the rest of my life. Capt. Casey will always be remembered as a true servant leader, who displayed the values of the Warrior Ethos.
What was accomplished in the AIR will continue on LAND with coordinated community support and the power of CFLC I'm sure. Jenn was a true comrade her intelligence and witty nature will be truly missed. Captain McDougall, wishing you a full and speedy recovery, Sir. My eternal respect, gratitude, prayers and thoughts are with all friends, teammates and family of Capt. Casey her leadership, bravery and honor will never be forgotten.

Canadian Supreme Court Chief Justice: Beverly McLachlin, PC
Beverly McLachlin, PC is the 17th Chief Justice of Canada has served our country with great honor and distinction for over three decades. Born and raised in Pincher Creek, Alberta her story is one of hard-work, perseverance and exceptional intellect. Graduating with a Bachelors in Philosophy then continuing into Law School at the University of Alberta where she was recognized as the top student during her studies she was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1969. After practicing law until 1975 she perused academia as an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia until she was then appointed Chief Justice of the British Columbia Supreme Court in 1988. However her career acceleration didn't stop as just a year later she was nominated to serve as a judge for the Supreme Court of Canada in 1989 by Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney and then appointed Chief Justice in 2000 by Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien. Throughout her life she's been a transcendent formative figure in her profession with over 27 honorary degrees from universities across Canada and other countries throughout the world.
It was a real and sincere honor to meet Justice McLachlin at an Ottawa reception back in 2012 at the University of Ottawa just before leaving to Alberta to continue on my own journey of professional development and growth.I wanted to personally acknowledge Justice McLachlin and wish her well as she retires from the Queen's Bench. Beverley is a trailblazer for more than her gender, the work she's done throughout the years has helped shape and make our country what it is today, for me her life long integrity is what's been most impressive. Yes, she's Canada's first female Chief Justice however her decisions, diplomatic and respected judgment will be the legacy that she is remembered for along with the ceiling her appointment broke and the merit of which it was earned.
Great Thought Leader: Jiddu Krishnamurti
ne of the best things about University in particularly the study of Liberal Arts is the emphasis on critical thought and debate. One of the most unique speakers I have ever been exposed to is Jiddu Krishnamurti, an incredible mind with provoking perspectives in relation to the study of human understanding of "the self" and concepts within religious theory, thought and reality. Enjoy.
Jiddu Krishnamurti /ˈdʒɪduː ˌkrɪʃnəˈmɜrti/ (12 May 1895 – 17 February 1986) was an Indian speaker and writer on philosophical and spiritual subjects. In his early life he was groomed to be the new World Teacher but later rejected this mantle and disbanded the organisation behind it. His subject matter included psychological revolution, the nature of mind, meditation, inquiry, human relationships, and bringing about radical change in society. He constantly stressed the need for a revolution in the psyche of every human being and emphasized that such revolution cannot be brought about by any external entity, be it religious, political, or social.
Krishnamurti was born in British India and in early adolescence, he had a chance encounter with prominent occultist and theosophist Charles Webster Leadbeater in the grounds of the Theosophical Society headquarters at Adyar in Madras. He was subsequently raised under the tutelage of Annie Besant and Leadbeater, leaders of the Society at the time, who believed him to be a "vehicle" for an expected World Teacher. As a young man, he disavowed this idea and dissolved the Order of the Star in the East, an organisation that had been established to support it.
He claimed allegiance to no nationality, caste, religion, or philosophy, and spent the rest of his life travelling the world, speaking to large and small groups and individuals. He wrote many books, among them The First and Last Freedom, The Only Revolution, and Krishnamurti's Notebook. Many of his talks and discussions have been published. His last public talk was in Madras, India, in January 1986, a month before his death at his home in Ojai, California.
His supporters, working through non-profit foundations in India, Great Britain and the United States, oversee several independent schools based on his views on education. They continue to transcribe and distribute his thousands of talks, group and individual discussions, and writings by use of a variety of media formats and languages.
Great Thought Leader: James Allen
James Allen is a literary mystery man. His inspirational writings have influenced millions for good. Yet today he remains almost unknown. None of his nineteen books give a clue to his life other than to mention his place of residence - Ilfracombe, England. His name cannot be found in a major reference work. Not even the Library of Congress or the British Museum has much to say about him. Who was this man who believed in the power of thought to bring fame, fortune and happiness? Or did he, as Henry David Thoreau says, hear a different drummer? James Allen never gained fame or fortune. That much is true. His was a quiet, unrewarded genius. He seldom made enough money from his writings to cover expenses.
Allen was born in Leicester, Central England, (November, 28, 1864). The family business failed within a few years, and in 1879 his father left for America in an effort to recoup his losses. The elder Allen had hoped to settle in the United States, but was robbed and murdered before he could send for his family. The financial crisis that resulted forced James to leave school at fifteen. He eventually became a private secretary, a position that would be called administrative assistant today. He worked in this capacity for several British manufacturers until 1902, when he decided to devote all his time to writing.
Allen insists upon the power of the individual to form his own character and to create his own happiness. Thought and character are one, he says, and as character can only manifest and discover itself through environment and circumstance, the outer conditions of a person's life will always be found to be harmoniously related to his inner state. This does not mean that a man's circumstances at any given time are an indication of his entire character, but that those circumstances are so intimately connected with some vital thought element within him that, for the time being, they are indispensable to his development.
Allen starts us thinking - even when we would rather be doing something else. He tells us how thought leads to action. He shows us how to turn our dreams into realities. His is a philosophy that has brought success to millions. It is the philosophy of Norman Vincent Peale's The Power of Positive Thinking and of Joshua Liebman's Peace of Mind. We become spiritually rich, Allen writes, when we discover the adventure within; when we are conscious of the oneness of all life; when we know the power of meditation; when we experience kinship with nature.
Energy East & New Western Partnership
Foundation of Western Economic Development
It shouldn't be a surprise to the east of the rise of economic prosperity of western Canada. Our nation is already very vast with plenty of resources and economic opportunity throughout however the Western Provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan have taken things to another level with the New Western Partnership. And it hasn't got as much attention as you would think but the Energy Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) proves how ahead of the game and serious the region is on taking a leadership role in regards to policy and economic development framework of a National Energy Strategy for Canada on a provincial and federal level. They have exercised there provincial powers to attract global investment into strengthen there individual and regional economies. The east can learn a thing or two in regards to co-operation, I can't help but feel for Atlantic Canada with the exception of New Newfoundland & Labrador the mainland has become under stress as old established communities continue to fight tough economic and demographic trends that don't weigh in their benefit. A monumental and historical commissioned study/report titled Now or Never: An Urgent Call to Action for Nova Scotians commendably does an excellent job of highlighting these challenges, and it is encouraging because it seems to put an emphasis on taking appropriate action and does not sugar coat the facts.
Making Things Easy
Last month Ontario and Quebec primers Kathleen Wynne and Phillip Couillard had a meeting that resulted in a list of demands their provinces desired in order to have their support for the proposed Energy East Pipeline. Saskatchewan Primer Brad Wall took immediate offense to what seemed as a self-righteous bold act for two have not provinces boosting and adding conditions. However Alberta's new primer Jim Prentice was more refined and smooth understanding the game he came to Ontario wooing the benefits of the pipeline and agreed on the needs in principle of mitigating as many Green House Gas (GHG) factors as possible in the development. The pipeline GHG conditions Ontario and Quebec have asked for seem to be an attempt to show leadership and power of influence in regards to "climate change" and energy development, something many Eastern Canadians have been championing. However this shouldn't be about political posturing anymore and saying all the right things to earn political value points, the reality is Western Canada has it's act together in regards to offering international businesses a true value proposition, not just in its natural resources but in the regions commendable effort to streamline business and make things EASY! Brad Wall I think was probably a little upset because the "environmental card" was getting played and to him old, he doesn't want more conditions and bureaucracy but instead more action and enthusiasm.... maybe even gratefulness? That might be a bit much.
It's About Attitude
It's not talent, natural resources or anything else that makes the west more attractive for investment than eastern Canada in my personal and business opinion, it is simply just an easier place to make a living and do business at this time in history, there is no territory to protect, only grow. The best export Western Canada can bring to the East is a different type of natural resource, it is an attitude of hard work and getting things done. Not writing 12 reports before making a decision to appease 1000 stakeholders but to make a decision, take a path, and do whatever it takes to get the job done. A National Energy Strategy will become a main theme and story in 2015 that is my prediction, wither or not the Eastern/Atlantic Canadian provinces will set aside pride and do what is needed to get people at work on this Nation Building project, is yet to be determined.
The Morning Vow
The following passage is from the Book titled The Carpenter. I read an article by Geoffrey James via Inc Magazine a few months ago and have found it very inspirational. Each morning I read the passage below and can't help but feel the power of positive thought when reciting it. I've wanted to share this for sometime however have been so busy the last few months I have not gotten the chance until now. I hope you might find it empowering and it has as positive affect on you as it has for me.
I vow to stay positive in the face of negativity;
When I am surrounded by pessimism, I will choose optimism;
When I feel fear, I will choose faith;
When I want to hate, I will choose love;
When I want to be bitter, I will choose to get better;
When I experience a challenge, I will look for an opportunity to learn and grow;
When I experience a setback, I will be resilient;
When I meet failure, I will fail forward, toward future success;
With vision, hope, and faith, I will never give up and will always move forward toward my destiny;
I believe my best days are ahead of me, not behind me;
I believe I'm here for a reason and my purpose is greater than my challenges;
I believe that being positive not only makes me better, it make everyone around me better;
So today and every day I will be positive and strive to make a positive impact on the world.

Question On Family and Entrepreneurship
Interview by: Nina Zipkin, Staff Reporter at Entrepreneur Magazine
Q: What are you glad you didn’t know then that you know now?
A: I'm glad I didn't have kids until later in life. A dirty secret of entrepreneurship is that you never get a memo that says you can't undo personal and family relationships.
I watched people -- who I thought were gods at work -- who had kids that by the time they left home hated their parents because they had never seen them.
I would opt for a happy family over a pile of money. It was harder doing the family right, cost me one marriage in Silicon Valley but luckily there were no kids. I remember one day my ex-wife asked me, what’s more important: me or your job? I remember sitting there, having to think about it. And then we both looked at each other and realized the marriage was over. That was sad, because I wasn't mature enough to understand there were more important things than just doing the thing that was driving my passion. My other passion should be the family. And finally when I did get married again and have kids, I had a greater passion, which was to have a great family.
I don't understand why we're embarrassed to talk about this [topic] or see it as some sort of sign of weakness. Entrepreneurship is 24/7, but entrepreneurship without a family is meaningless. It's one of those fool's gold things.

Western Mission Complete
Today is Canada Day, I feel it is very appropriate to deliver this post on the Nations birthday, I feel more nationalistic than ever before. Like many of my peers and friends who live and work in the major urban centers of our country like Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver and Halifax the focus today is all about uniting under one flag, one country, and one land. It is a time when provincial rivirialies and regionalism is set aside and we celebrate the amazing opportunities, freedom and beauty our country has to offer the world, we are an example of how modern civil society should function,where democracy and liberty reign as the core values of who we are as a people, "True North Strong and Free!"
I left Ottawa, Ontario roughly a year ago today. I went to discover and understand the depths of the Canadian Energy sector, a business move that turned extremely personal. My work in the office led me into the field, a strategic and rational decision considering the reality of the economic landscape of Ontario. I wanted to know what was so special about Alberta it was a tremendously powerful learning opportunity and I took advantage with the support of my friends, family and loved ones. Living in the Nation's Capital you really start to feel a sense of Nationalism, and although we are a Civic Nation unlike our American cousins to the south, I wanted to know more about Canada's deep wealth of energy that was stored beneath the ground, I knew that if I was going to truly become an expert on the topic I should have the necessary credentials, experience, and knowledge to truly understand what is going on and that is why I choose the Trade of Pipefitting, a trade that ranked a respectable 23 out of 50 top jobs in Canada according to Canadian Business Magazine 2013 survey.
I had simple questions such as; are the "Oil Sands" developments in Fort McMurray an evil place of greed, deceit and environmental destruction? Or a wonder of human ingenuity, engineering, and scientific discovery? The answer is personal depending on your cultural learned values and or perspective but having been on the ground I feel Canada should be extremely proud of it's responsible energy development. The opportunities that will be available for individuals who take personal responsibility for their own welfare and diversify their labour skill set to enhance their standard of living especially over the next 30 years is incredible. Alberta is expected to grow from a province of 4M today into 7M+ by 2050, that is still less than the population of the Greater Toronto Area alone, however an incredible influx of people nonetheless which will drive further growth and business in many different sectors.
I took a less popular root west that landed me in North West Alberta, Grande Prairie to be exact. In the year that passed I learned a tremendous amount about myself and the hard skilled tradesman of our country. I learned a lot about physical/mental health, pipelines, oil extraction, surveying , health & safety not to mention the income opportunities that are available for the next generation of Canadians who decide to go west and write their own ticket. However with all that being said I am now officially residing back in my home province of Ontario, and back in the Nation's Capital, where I belong, I love being a quick 45 minute flight or VIA train ride to Toronto, and having an international network right at my doorstep. Just like any other educational degree, completing my apprenticeship is something I am very proud of and hold dearly, it required a lot of sacrifice, hard work and dedication and I couldn't have done it without the support of my friends, family and loved ones along the way. However now that the majority of the hard work has been completed, I look forward to continuing to learn and apply the lessons I acquired in the west into my practice and studies moving forward in the field of Management Consulting. Some important research I have discovered along the way is below, It is publications like this that help in continuing the knowledge development and healthy debate of how Canada will approach and develop our resources in the years to come to benefit the people of our country.

Emotional Freedom and The Self
"If you truly want to be happy in life, you should tie it to a goal not to people or objects" - Alberta Einstein
Peace in Oneself
Who are you? A simple question that many find difficult to answer, our identities can be tied to many different things, in the field of entrepreneurship where ideas are encouraged, the "idea", "concept" or outside projection can begin to influence who a person truly is. The key to overcoming being lost in any journey is to find a true sense of inner peace and self fulfillment within one's own being. When you tie your happiness to an individual or object you will find that this feeling of happiness or sadness (emotion) is impermanent. When you tie your happiness to any independent source outside yourself, you have thus lost yourself and will in turn not be able to genuinely connect with other people. In business, trades, life in general it is all about relationships no matter the audience. I am starting to find that all too often the most important relationship that matter the most is ignored. This is the relationship within oneself, something that would seem elementary but that is easily forgotten especially when focused on impermanent ideas and concepts.
Discovery
I think a major key to happiness and success is placing more emphasis on emotional freedom, overcoming the fear of loneliness, and finding enlightenment within oneself. This thought process and idea is constructive specially when considering the role of technology in our lives today. Working in isolation away from constant wifi connection last year, I found that my business and personal relationships changed significantly due to the distance of physical geography, and internet connectivity. When these connections were permanently removed in the digital realm, a huge wave of emotion and loss overcame me in a way that physically and mentally shocked me. The emotional dependence we have on technology today is real and as a result studies suggest there is a heavy mental health risk to high frequency digital media and technology users.
"In order to truly experience life in a liberated state of being, in freedom, one has to be free of any form of emotional dependence. The enlightened way of living, or the awakened state, simply points to the state of being which is free of dependence on the “outside” for fulfillment, and finds complete satisfaction in one’s own presence or “Self”. Presently, more and more people are becoming conscious of the bondage created by emotional dependence, and are finding their way back to their inner sense of “being” where they find a connection and fulfillment that makes them feel whole again." - Sen - CalmDownMind.com
Modern Research
Our brain is constantly evolving and learning how to deal with the flow of content/information it is taking in everyday. We place a cover photo on facebook and an avatar profile photo to project who and what we are to the rest of the world. But our true selves are far beyond what we post and share through social media, however we create emotional ties to these images, we connect ourselves to this "reality" without sometimes taking into consideration the mental health component of how this affects our relationships and true level of privacy and intimacy. The following article and link attached gives more details to these studies and findings.
Click here for the link. In the coming years I would not be surprised if there is continued research and studies into this interesting evolution within society.
Quiet Space and Reflection
In my heart I hear the beat of the plains, the vast wild space that enlightened my heart to the possibilities and endless opportunities that live within the open heart. Quite spaces where an individual can reflect on what is most important in life, not business, politics, or a new idea but the relationships that define and help make us who we are. It is almost one full year of quiet spaces and reflection, and the loss of love burns the heart. However more than ever it is important to sink deep into thought to acknowledge and protect the best of what was lost.

Personal Reflections: Western Training
Cory Devoe, is a 25 year old Journeyman Pipefitter, From Newfoundland & Labrador. That I trained with on a project outside Grande Prairie, Alberta with Reed Energy Group.
A new chapter begins
Life is about making decisions and some are easier than others but all have consequences. The reality of these decisions when unprepared to face them can be emotionally damaging, and lead a person astray.
“Believe in your vision, and work hard to achieve your dream. Never quit, live with integrity, unite, don't divide.” - Lessons From My Grandfather
When deciding to advance my education it required me to move from my home and love in Ottawa, ON Canada. Unlike many of my peers who choose to advance their education by enrolling in a Masters degree. After 7 years of work experience in the finance and business technology sector, I felt that there was a missing element to my professional development that needed to be addressed. I needed to develop a hard skill, that would compensate well and support my life and small family. Despite my strong academic background and proven abilities the excess supply of undergraduates and limited demand made this a differentiation characteristic I knew would be valuable in the present, and future.
I have learned project management, procurement, health & safety, engineered drawings, and the importance of financial controls at a ground level, not to mention how to cut, thread, measure, and assemble steel production; this experience has helped balance out my liberal arts, urban, digital perspectives and allowed me to see first hand the true potential of Canadian industry development and the importance of the Build Force Canada initiative.
Hard work generation
I have discovered that "Western Alienation" is very true. The hours of work, dedication and amount of time required by those who live and work in the energy sector in Western Canada is beyond what anyone can imagine in the east. However the kicker is, many of the young workers in this region are actually from the east. So not only are they taxed more because of the long hours but they are also separated from loved ones due to travel restraints, time, not to mention cost.
The federal social service government funded programs and grants gained from employment income tax garnishments of Western Canadians is extremely imbalanced when considering the amount of hard work and hours that are required by those who do the job.
Living in the present
The training program I was on was scheduled to last 2.5 years, I am at the halfway point. The program offered financial security, comfort, and stability but life has a way of changing plans specially when family and loved ones are involved. I am proud to say that I am a registered apprentice, and look forward to continuing my development as red seal journeyman. My strength, passion, love and desire still remains strong in my work as a business development professional, however for the rest of this journey I am excited for the opportunities that have been put before me and for the support and love I had from the special people in my life.
Overall I have learned education is about building a solid foundation, of useful skills and knowledge that will enable you to not just survive but thrive in society. Ontario has become a mixed economy of door knockers/salesmen, computer programmers and retail/consumer services where union labour work dominates not the free market. The glory of "Hamilton Steel City" and Ontario's power industrial development is slowly weakening as the growth in the GTA over the past decade has struggled to support the population expansion. This reality has forced major cities to invest heavily in infrastructure to sustain the flow of commerce. And has led to amazing opportunities in the trades for labour force across the country.
I was born in Ontario, raised in Atlantic Canada and learned the true meaning of hard work as a man in the West. With the support and encouragement of my professional network, friends, and family I plan on returning back to the Nations Capital in the near future however until that time I will always remain strong, work hard, stay loyal to those who love me and helped me get this far. On top of a facility completing the final project.
